Crown, mortar joints, brick face, liner, flashing, footing — assessed in one visit. Free. No obligation to proceed. This is where most A-Z contracts begin.
Deteriorating mortar joints are the most common chimney problem in Central NY. We remove failed mortar and repoint with properly matched material.

When repair isn’t enough, we rebuild from the roofline or footing with period appropriate brick matching.
A damaged liner is a carbon monoxide risk. We replace clay tile and install stainless steel liners sized for your appliance.
Flashing failures, porous brick, cracked crowns. We trace the source and fix it, not just the symptoms.
Spalling brick, efflorescence, cracked joints. We restore structural integrity and appearance using period-appropriate materials where needed.
Syracuse homeowners: watch for these warning signs before small problems become expensive repairs.
Moisture inside your firebox after rain or snowmelt is a sign your crown, flashing, or liner has failed.
Salt deposits on exterior brick mean water has been working through your masonry for some time.
A blocked or damaged flue forces combustion gases back inside - a health and safety hazard.
Freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on mortar. Visible gaps mean water is getting in every storm. Learn about the 7 most common causes of chimney brick and flue damage in Syracuse.
Individual bricks that crumble, pop out, or show surface flaking have been damaged by repeated freeze-thaw cycles and need replacement before water enters the structure.
Homes built before 1980 may have clay liners that have reached end of service life without showing obvious signs.

We are proud of our consistent 5-star reviews, and even prouder of the trust our customers place in us.Minor repairs like chimney crown patching start around $250 in the Syracuse area. Tuckpointing a full chimney typically runs $400 to $1,200. Liner replacement ranges from $1,500 to $4,000. A full chimney rebuild can reach $15,000 or more depending on height, brick type, and structural conditions. Every chimney is different, which is why we offer free, written, itemized estimates before any work begins.
How do I know if I need a repair or a full chimney rebuild? If the structural damage is limited to above the roofline and the footing is sound, a partial rebuild is usually sufficient and far less expensive than a full rebuild. If the chimney shows widespread spalling, major leaning, or footing failure, a full rebuild from the ground up may be necessary. Our free inspection will tell you exactly which applies to your chimney, with no obligation to proceed. See our full guide to 9 chimney repair issues and when to rebuild.
Tuckpointing is the process of removing deteriorated or failed mortar from between the bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. It is the most common and cost-effective chimney repair in Central New York because freeze-thaw cycles break down mortar faster here than in most of the country. If you see visible gaps, crumbling, or missing mortar between your chimney bricks, tuckpointing is likely needed.
The primary cause is Syracuse’s freeze-thaw cycle. Water enters through a cracked crown, failed flashing, porous brick, or open mortar joints, then freezes and expands, widening the opening. Over multiple seasons this creates progressively worse leaks. Secondary causes include chimney cap failure or absence, which allows rain and snow to fall directly into the flue. Most leaks involve more than one failure point, which is why a proper inspection matters.
It depends on the cause and your policy. Sudden damage caused by a covered peril, such as a lightning strike, fallen tree, or windstorm, is generally covered. Gradual deterioration from age, deferred maintenance, or freeze-thaw damage is typically excluded. We recommend contacting your insurer before work begins if you believe the damage may have a covered cause. We can provide written documentation of our findings to support a claim.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends annual chimney inspections for any chimney in active use. For Syracuse homeowners, a spring inspection after winter is the most critical. Freeze-thaw cycles can open new cracks, shift crowns, and compromise mortar joints in a single season, and catching damage early is almost always the difference between a tuckpointing job and a full rebuild.
A-Z Construction performs structural chimney inspections as a standalone service. A structural inspection looks specifically for masonry deterioration, crown failure, spalling brick, liner damage, and footing integrity, the issues a sweep typically does not assess. Inspections are free and come with no obligation to proceed with repairs.
Efflorescence is the white powdery or crusty staining you sometimes see on brick chimneys. It is caused by water moving through the masonry and depositing mineral salts on the surface as it evaporates. The staining itself is harmless, but what it tells you is not — it is a reliable indicator that water is actively penetrating your chimney masonry. Left unaddressed, the underlying water infiltration will cause progressive structural damage.
Yes. We regularly serve Cazenovia, Nelson, and surrounding Madison County communities in addition to our core Onondaga County service area. If you are unsure whether your location is within our service area, call 315-488-5292 and we will confirm immediately.
A structural chimney inspection by A-Z Construction covers every component of the chimney masonry: the crown (concrete cap at the top), mortar joints between the bricks, the brick face itself for spalling or damage, the liner condition where visible, flashing at the roofline, and the chimney’s structural plumb and footing stability. We are not performing a sweep — we are specifically looking for the issues that lead to water infiltration, structural failure, and costly rebuilds. The inspection is free, conducted on-site, and comes with a clear verbal and written summary of findings. No obligation to proceed with any work.
Most chimney repairs, including tuckpointing, crown repair, and flashing work, are completed in a single day. Partial chimney rebuilds (above the roofline) typically take one to three days depending on height and brick matching. A full chimney rebuild from the footing up can take three to seven days. We schedule most jobs within the same week as the estimate.
Tuckpointing (also called repointing) addresses the mortar joints between bricks. It removes failed mortar and replaces it without touching the bricks themselves. It is the right solution when the bricks are structurally sound, but the mortar has deteriorated due to freeze-thaw cycles. A chimney rebuild is necessary when the bricks themselves are crumbling, when the structure is leaning or structurally compromised, or when the damage extends below the roofline into the main body of the chimney. Our free structural inspection will tell you exactly which applies to your chimney.
