YOUR FIREPLACE WORKS HARDER THAN YOU THINK. WE'VE BEEN RESTORING THEM SINCE 1984.

¶ 1 — THE PROBLEM

Six months of heating season. Hundreds of thermal cycles. Moisture freezing inside refractory brick and forcing open joints. Most fireplace damage builds quietly until the smoke backs up or the inspector finds a cracked liner.

¶ 2 — THE COMPANY

Masonry specialists serving Onondaga County since 1984. Refractory brick, smoke chamber repair, firebox rebuilding. Not a general contractor. Not a cleaning service. We fix it right the first time, with Free Estimates and same-week scheduling.

¶ 3 — SERVICE INVENTORY

Firebox repair and rebuilding, refractory brick replacement, smoke chamber restoration, damper repair, surround masonry repair, full rebuilds. Syracuse, Fayetteville, Manlius, Cazenovia, and throughout Onondaga County.

FIREPLACE REPAIR & RESTORATION SERVICES WE PROVIDE

FIREBOX REPAIR & RESTORATION

Cracked refractory brick and eroded mortar allow heat to reach masonry not designed for it. We replace and repoint with correctly formulated refractory materials. Standard brick is never used.

FULL FIREBOX REBUILDS

When repair isn’t enough, we dismantle and reconstruct to NFPA 211 standards using refractory-rated materials throughout.

SMOKE CHAMBER RESTORATION

Deteriorated chamber mortar causes backdrafting and creosote buildup. We restore through parging, a smooth, correctly formulated mortar coat applied to all interior surfaces.

DAMPER REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT

A failed damper either leaks conditioned air all winter or blocks draft entirely. We repair, replace, and install top-mounted systems where improved efficiency is needed.

REFRACTORY BRICK REPLACEMENT

Cracked firebox bricks replaced with matched refractory-rated material. Standard construction brick is a fire hazard in a firebox. We never use it.

FIREPLACE SURROUND MASONRY REPAIR

Cracked joints and spalling brick on the surround mean water is moving toward the firebox. Repaired with materials matched to the original.

SMOKE BACKDRAFT AND DRAFT PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS

Smoke in the room is a symptom. We identify the root cause – a blocked flue, damaged smoke chamber, or negative air pressure -and fix it.

DOES YOUR FIREPLACE NEED ATTENTION?

Syracuse homeowners: watch for these warning signs before small problems become expensive repairs.

SMOKE ENTERING THE LIVING ROOM

Smoke that enters the room instead of traveling up the flue indicates a draft problem such as a blocked flue, a deteriorated smoke chamber, or a firebox-to-flue ratio issue. This is also a carbon monoxide risk. Do not use the fireplace again until the cause is identified and corrected.

CRACKED OR CRUMBLING REFRACTORY BRICK

Visible cracks in the firebox back wall or side walls, or brick faces that are flaking away, mean the refractory lining is failing. Continued use accelerates the damage and allows heat to transfer into surrounding structural masonry.

WHITE OR GREY MORTAR DUST IN THE FIREBOX

Powder or debris accumulating on the firebox floor between uses is refractory mortar falling from the joints above. This is an early warning sign of firebox deterioration. Catch it now and repair costs are modest. Ignore it and the refractory brick will follow. Learn why refractory mortar fails and what correct repair requires.

WATER IN THE FIREBOX

Moisture inside the firebox after rain or snowmelt means the crown, flashing, cap, or liner has failed above. Water sitting in a firebox accelerates rust on the damper assembly and begins deteriorating the refractory mortar joints from above.

STRONG ODORS FROM FIREPLACE WHEN NOT IN USE

A persistent smoky or acrid odor from a fireplace not in use indicates creosote or combustion residue being drawn back into the room, typically through a failed damper seal or deteriorated smoke chamber. It can also indicate a cracked flue liner.

RUST ON THE DAMPER OR FIREBOX FLOOR

Rust on metal components inside the firebox is direct evidence of chronic moisture exposure. It signals that water has been entering the system regularly and that the masonry around it has been absorbing that moisture for the same period.

MORE THAN 10 YEARS SINCE LAST PROFESSIONAL INSPECTION

Fireplaces in homes built before 1980, the majority of our service area in Onondaga County, may have refractory mortar that has reached end of service life, smoke chambers with severely deteriorated parging, and clay tile flue liners that have never been camera-inspected. Annual inspection is the NFPA 211 standard. Ten years without one is ten years of undetected deterioration. See all 7 warning signs your fireplace needs restoration.

FIREPLACE RESTORATION QUESTIONS - ANSWERED

Frequently asked by Syracuse and Onondaga County homeowners.
How much does chimney repair cost in Syracuse, NY?

How much does fireplace restoration cost in Syracuse, NY?

Fireplace restoration costs in Syracuse range from approximately $300 to $800 for firebox repointing, $400 to $900 for smoke chamber parging, $300 to $600 for damper replacement, and $2,500 to $6,000 or more for a full firebox rebuild. Individual refractory brick replacement runs $50 to $150 per brick depending on quantity and access. Every fireplace is different, which is why we provide free, written, itemized estimates before any work begins. The price we quote is the price you pay.

What is refractory brick and why does it matter?

Refractory brick, also called firebrick, is a specialized masonry unit engineered to withstand direct flame exposure and extreme thermal cycling. It is denser and more heat-resistant than standard construction brick, and it is the only acceptable material for firebox linings. Standard brick used in a firebox will crack and fail under heat stress, and the failure can allow combustion temperatures to reach surrounding structural masonry. All brick replacement work we perform inside fireboxes uses refractory-rated material. We never substitute standard brick in firebox applications. Learn more about refractory mortar failure and correct firebox repair.

Why is smoke coming into my living room when I use the fireplace?

Smoke entering the living space indicates a draft problem. The fire is not drawing combustion gases upward through the flue as it should. Common causes in the Syracuse area include a deteriorated or blocked smoke chamber, a damper that does not open fully, a flue that is undersized relative to the firebox opening, negative air pressure in the home (common in tightly sealed newer construction), or a flue cap or animal obstruction. We diagnose draft problems systematically and address the root cause. The same symptom can have several different causes, and treating the wrong one does not solve the problem.

What is smoke chamber parging and does my fireplace need it?

Smoke chamber parging is the process of applying a smooth, correctly formulated mortar coat to the interior surfaces of the smoke chamber , the funnel-shaped masonry cavity above the firebox that directs combustion gases toward the flue. An unlined or deteriorated smoke chamber has rough, stepped masonry surfaces that create turbulence in the gas flow, accumulate creosote, and allow hot gases to contact structural masonry. Most fireplaces built before 1990 in Onondaga County have smoke chambers that have never been parged or whose original parging has deteriorated. If your fireplace has draft issues, unusual odors, or heavy creosote buildup, smoke chamber condition is a high-probability contributing factor.

Is fireplace restoration covered by homeowners insurance?

Coverage depends on the cause of damage and your specific policy. Sudden damage from a covered peril – a chimney fire, for example, or storm damage – is generally covered. Gradual deterioration from age, thermal cycling, or deferred maintenance is typically excluded. We recommend contacting your insurer before work begins if you believe the damage may have a covered cause. We provide written documentation of our findings and scope to support claims.

How long does fireplace restoration take?

Most firebox repair and repointing work is completed in a single visit. Smoke chamber parging requires cure time before the fireplace can be used, typically 24 to 48 hours minimum, longer if the parging material is applied in cool temperatures. Full firebox rebuilds typically require two visits: demolition and rebuild on the first, inspection and any finishing work on the second, with a cure period before use. We give accurate scheduling and cure time estimates at the time of the written quote.

How often should a fireplace be inspected in Central New York?

NFPA 211, the national chimney and fireplace safety standard, recommends annual inspection for any fireplace that is in use. For Syracuse-area homeowners, we consider annual inspection particularly important given the length and severity of the heating season and the age of most Onondaga County homes. A fall inspection before the heating season starts, or a spring inspection after it ends, allows damage from the previous winter to be identified and addressed before it compounds. We offer free inspections. There is no reason to put it off.

Can you restore a fireplace that has not been used in years?

Yes, and this is one of the most common restoration scenarios we encounter. Fireplaces that have been sealed or unused for years in older Syracuse-area homes frequently have severely deteriorated refractory mortar, deteriorated smoke chamber parging, damaged or frozen dampers, and in many cases clay tile flue liners that have cracked or separated at joints without any visible exterior indication. We assess the full system before recommending reactivation, and we restore each failed component to safe operating condition. Reopening a long-unused fireplace without professional assessment is a fire and carbon monoxide risk.
